shredding the trails

We were up too early for Boulder. We had to wait for a breakfast place to open. And then we had to wait for a bike rental place to open. We took that opportunity to visit outdoor specialist REI and make sure we had our 10 camping essentials. I came out 100 bucks poorer, but at least now I have some matches that will light in storms and a whistle that's also a compass AND a thermometer. So we were at the bike shop half an hour after it opened, and already no bloody bikes left! So we rang a place in Fort Collins, reserved their last three, and jumped in the car. 12:30 before we finally hit the road on our ill-fitting mountain bikes. We'd been given a suggested trail. We should have noticed the warning signs when as we were leaving we told a guy where we were going and he said 'oh, so you like the technical descents'. I really began to feel like this was going to be fun when I was riding behind a distinctly unstable Kenneth who's legs were going like billy the wizz cos his 'gears weren't working'. Yeah right. We were only a few minutes into the trail up the hill before Hoff's chain had come off and we were all absolutely knackered. I'll forever cherish my clip of Hoff attacking the slopes. Real man vs nature stuff. It was SO difficult. At least now I know why they call them pushbikes. But I really enjoyed it. Could definitely give it another crack but I think Hoff's sworn off mountain biking for good. The old man on foot who we saw at the top of the hill actually got to the bottom before a despondent Hoff. And to top it off, he got charged to replace a pedal and chain-ring he'd manage to damage. Let's just say he pushed his bike to the limit and leave it at that. And then it was on to a couple of the famous Fort Collins breweries for some beer sampling. New Belgian Brewery (Fat Tire) and Odell's. We finally got back to Boulder and out to dinner at 9, and as with the previous night, plans to go out drinking afte dinner were shelved for sleep. Sorry no photo's. Haven't been able to add any.
