Up at 6 wantin to be on road by 7. We did ok. We felt a bit sheepish as we looke down the row of picnic tables at everyone creating their camping breakfasts whilst we unwrapped our leftover subway footlongs.
But we got out and on our way to grand lake, via the scenic trail ridge highway, which crosses the continental divide. It gets up over 14,000ft at that point. You're above the tree line and in alpine tundra, so the scenery (and temperature) are very different to lower down.

We found a 4 mile each way hike up to Mt Ida and decided to scrap our plans to got to Vail, and do this instead. Was a good decision as the hike was a testing one. I felt a headache coming on early and made the gang stop for fear of altitude sickness. The headache went once I removed my tightly tied bandanna.

It was a great hike for a variety of scenery an wildlife. We saw a herd of elk at a watering hole. A small herd of bighorn sheep on the path, and lots of something that looks like a beaver. Still no moose or bear's though.

We drove the rest of the trail to grand lake, and then on to frisco near breckenridge

Just pulled into ramada limited. Kfc next door.

Slight problem with the toilet meant we had to move rooms. I don't think I need to go into details

Lovely to have a shower for the first time in 3.5 days.
