Day 4 continued

Our day centred on getting to the Far Western Tavern in Guadalupe for lunch - steaks to die for, apparently. The town was fly-blown and clearly home to all the Mexican workers we saw labouring in the fields. When we got to the tavern, it was closed and looked like it hadn't seen a customer in years (as did the whole of the town). Disappointed, we found the local Mexican hole-in-the-wall takeaway and ordered lunch. We asked the only other customer when the Far Western had closed. It's not closed, said he, it's moved! Such anguish!

So, back onto Route 1 through delightful coastal towns with quaint names like Pismo Beach and Avila Beach. Next stop was the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo - a monument kitsch. 120 rooms and everyone decorated lavishly and individually. We stopped only for coffee and cookies and the toilet experience - words cannot do it justice but Steve has a video. Basically, you end up peeing into a rockface and waterfall!
Back on the road for the run along the stunning coastal scenery of Big Sur and into our motel in Monterey. We found downtown just as lovely as the seafront and enjoyed an interesting chat with a speech therapist over a beer on the topic of English and American idioms and syntax! Dinner at the Cafe Trieste and to bed. Onwards to San Fran!
