Stuart Day 10

We were very pleased with ourselves this morning, managing to buy tickets on Portland's mass transit system the Max, and getting ourselves downtown. I am an 'honored citizen' so I only pay 2 bucks for a one-day travel card. Anyway, Portland is not a place I shall be clamouring to come back to. It seems to have 3 icons. Powells bookshop, the world's largest independent seller of new and second-hand books, is well worth a visit. Then there is the bridge:
and the sign
They're making a pretty good job of it. Perhaps early on a Monday was not the best time to see it.

Anyway, we had a strategy meeting last night and decided to eschew the coastal route through Washington  State and head straight past Seattle to the Olympic Peninsula. Good decision! We were in the car by 2 o clock and headed up I5 towards Seattle, turning off onto our old favourite Highway 101 to Port Townsend. The weather was sunny and we had snow-covered Mt St Helens, Mt Rainier and the Olympic Mountain range on port and starboard. The road wound through pine forests and waterways. No traffic, no towns, just the odd homestead, bar and grocery store. And loads of decaying vehicles and boats.

We finally reached Port Townsend, on Puget Sound. Paradise. An old Victorian town on the water's edge, snow-covered mountains, boats, the sunset and a great bar called Sirens. Our hotel, the Bishop Victorian, offers a room with 2 bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen and bathroom. We'll have a job tearing ourselves away from here! Photos tomorrow. Hoping for blue skies!
